Understanding Custom Packaging Pricing
The price depends on several factors. Understanding these helps you optimize your packaging budget.
1. Material
Material is 30 to 40 percent of total cost. Greyboard costs more than paperboard. Specialty papers cost more than standard coated art paper.
2. Size and Complexity
Larger boxes require more material. Complex structures (magnetic closures, drawer boxes) take more labor than simple tuck-end boxes.
3. Printing
CMYK is standard. Pantone spot colors add cost per color. Interior printing adds another pass.
4. Finishing
Each option adds cost: foil stamping, embossing, spot UV, lamination. Combining multiple finishes increases cost and production time.
5. Quantity
Higher quantities reduce per-unit cost. Price breaks at 500, 1000, 2500, 5000, 10000 units.
6. Inserts
Custom inserts (EVA foam, velvet, paperboard trays) add material and assembly cost.
7. Shipping
Export packing and freight depend on destination, method, and volume.
