How Much Do Custom Boxes Cost?

There is no single price for a custom box – cost is the sum of material, size, quantity, finishing and tooling. Understanding each driver helps you control budget without cutting corners that matter.

The five cost drivers

  • Material: greyboard and specialty papers cost more than standard folding carton board.
  • Size: larger sheets use more material and more press time.
  • Quantity: the single biggest lever. Setup costs – plates, dies, makeready – are spread across every unit.
  • Finishing: foil stamping, embossing, spot UV and lamination each add a pass and a cost.
  • Tooling: cutting dies and printing plates are one-time charges, typically quoted separately from unit cost.

Fixed vs. variable cost

Dies, plates and setup are fixed. Paper, ink, glue and labor are variable. This is why unit price drops sharply with volume: a 5,000-piece order carries the same tooling as a 500-piece order, but spreads it across ten times the boxes.

Where buyers overspend

  • Specifying premium finishing that the retail environment never rewards.
  • Over-engineering board thickness for a lightweight product.
  • Rigid construction where a folding carton would do the job.
